There are a few posts that I think I should regularly update as I think of them: #vanlife things I love, #vanlife things I don’t love, and #vanlife tips. I’ll add to the posts and occasionally change the posted date so they stay near the top of the blogs. I’m starting this post on August 16, 2018.
- Flying insects. I really don’t love mosquitoes, houseflies, horseflies, biting black flies, noseeums, wasps, sweat bees and meat bees (both wasps), and gnats.
- Food poisoning. I’ve gotten food poisoning twice since I started this little adventure. Both times was at Subway.
- Loneliness. I understand why many people can’t see the #vanlife without a partner. I have a lot of friends and family, but I don’t get to see many of them for very long as I travel. I’ve landed in a few camping parks where there are people to talk to, but I’ve only made three or four acquaintances who were aligned enough to add on Facebook, for example.
- The shit roads. About 10 years ago, I did a west-to-east, east-to-west trip across the United States. The secondary highways are dramatically worse than they were then, and they’re worse than most of the roads I’ve seen in Central America.
- Feeling gross. I spray Off or DEET or some other bug spray below my knees every time I set up camp. Currently, I’m using various anti-histamines, rubbing alcohol and chlorine on my arms where I was exposed to poison ivy. I constantly feel like there’s an oily film on my extremities. I usually shower every other day, and I buy makeup remover for daily cleanup, but I rarely feel totally clean.
